Sims appeared in the doorway. “The Vicar, Mr. Josiah Hume, and his wife wish to pay their respects.”

“I hope you will forgive me,“ Charles said when he saw the surprise on Michael’s face. “But I met the Vicar as we passed through the village and suggested he pay a call.” He had the grace to look apologetic for acting without Michael’s permission. “I didn’t know how soon you would be able to acquaint yourself with your neighbors.”

“And you were sure I was still at death’s door.” Michael said with a wry grin of forgiveness. “Send them up, Sims, and have Mrs. Redding send up a fresh pot of tea as well.”

Vicar Hume struck Michael as one of those men of the cloth who took his position seriously and saw that everyone else did as well. His narrow face and gaunt build made a contrast to the sweetly plump features and figure of his wife. When Charles introduced them to Michael their somber expressions lightened to discover Michael was not in immediate need of the Vicar’s services. The change in Mr. Hume’s demeanor gave promise that serious did not mean dour.

“Perhaps one day soon you will allow me to drive you around to meet your neighbors.” The vicar said after they had been served refreshments. “Sir Geoffrey’s hunting box is nearby and he will certainly invite you to one of his shooting parties. Lord and Lady Ryesdale will be in residence soon. And of course you will wish to meet Mr. Danvers, our local surgeon.”

Michael strove to keep his voice warm and his expression pleased. “Thank you,”

He did not intend to live as a hermit, but he didn’t look forward to meeting people who would invariably react with effusive sympathy or pity. Nor did he want the dubious attentions of another surgeon. He knew he must, though. He had been warned that injuries such as his required more than surface healing. “I confess I know virtually nothing about my new home.” He glanced at Charles. “Though I gather my brother has formed a general acquaintance with the neighborhood.”

“My knowledge is not great as I only came for the occasional inspection.” Charles corrected. “Though I have run into Sir Geoffrey at the tavern a few times after Mr. Hume introduced us, I have but a nodding acquaintance with Ryesdale.”

The clock in the hall stuck the hour and the Humes rose to excuse themselves. The vicar explained he had promised to visit one of his parishioners who had been ill. The illness had not been serious, he assured them, but a visit was called for nonetheless. They agreed that he would return the following week for their tour of the area.
